Notes from Bentucky

There's this little village in a southeastern Washington river valley that is like so many others...so many others that are hidden jewels. Benton City has garnered the name "Bentucky" because it is considered backwards by the raised noses of the near-by communities. We like it that way. It's "Back Home in ol Bentucky" to the strings of mandolins, banjos, fiddles, dulcimers, guitars and the like. Take off your cufflinks and other puffery and join us!

LIBRARY SHERIFF

I just went through downtown Bentucky and saw an interesting sign on a storefront. LIBRARY SHERIFF. I wonder what he or she does as a library sheriff. Things are differnt here in Bentucky, fer sher. Let me think....chase folks that leave the library without properly checking out books? How 'bout issuing tickets for late returns. There's gotta be more challenging stuff to do. What about investigating missing books...damaged books...dog-earred books.... It could be endlessly challenging. There must in fact be a forensic science degree that deals specifically with the many challenges facing the modern library sheriff. I'll have to do a Google search on this...wait one.... Back. Looks like Bentucky is unique in it's use of this office. We're forward-looking! I look for other communities to emply one or more in the future.
