Notes from Bentucky

There's this little village in a southeastern Washington river valley that is like so many others...so many others that are hidden jewels. Benton City has garnered the name "Bentucky" because it is considered backwards by the raised noses of the near-by communities. We like it that way. It's "Back Home in ol Bentucky" to the strings of mandolins, banjos, fiddles, dulcimers, guitars and the like. Take off your cufflinks and other puffery and join us!

American Political Cowboys

Ain't it quaint what the EU (European Union) folks think of the American cowboy! It's a hoot. They actually (not all "theys", but enough) think that calling us cowboys is an insult...heck, it's a compliment! . Reagan did the horse thing to great affect and Bush is sporting that image as well. Ain't it great to have Americans that are proud of their heritage. Can't understand folks that get into the masochistic self-flagellation so prevalent with the girlie men of today's American Liberal culture. I must have something wrong with me, right? Broken. Archaic. The new man is to have no patriotism, no guns, no values (traditional, anyway), no testosterone, and no backbone...sound like anyone you know? Thought so. I miss the ol cowboys that rode fast, talked straight (and honest), saved the damsels in distress, and loved their horses. A world where relative good had no place. Where prayers at the dinner table were a respected and reverent time and where preachers were the good guys. Guess I'm jes ol fashend. An dum. Feels right...think I'll keep it. Thoughts about a Bentucky music festival

Just back from work and been thinking about my need for more music. I like Bluegrass and old Americana in general and I was thinkin, "Why not try for a music festival in Benton City?". Wouldn't it be great to have a venue for the local musicians to share their talents for the community and for the community to have some good, wholesome wares to share with the greater TriCities area. Have to do some more research on the idea...talk to some locals, etc...see if there's interest and a willingness to help...to contribute some cash.. It would pay back for the local merchants in sales. Hmmmm....

Intro thoughts

Yep...new here. It's about time I got back into some kind of publishing again. I toyed with it a bit in journalism at Minot State University (Minot State College then) in 1973-74 in Minot, North Dakota. I was the Editor of a small college newspaper called the Red and Green...pretty cool name, eh? Right. Anyway, I was selected for the editing slot by an ailing journalism prof who died the summer before I started...not an advantage, to say the least...for either of us. It was great fun doing the paper thing, but professionalism wasn't our forte, to be sure. It was the early 70s and freedom meant license, if you know what I mean. It is said that it is the youth that swim in Liberalism and the old in Conservatism...guilty on both counts...not totally, but true enough.

This little village could use a news center...maybe this blog could be a start. It has a quaint little paper, but it is traditional format stuff and this blogging seems to be a way for others to have a more active furum through which to talk...sortof a "round the pot-bellied stove" sorta thing. we'll see. I started a disciplined exercise regimen once too!
